BEING A APPRENTICE - SLOW AND PROPER WAY OF LEARNIG
Tuomo Pynttäri and Olli Holstikko were thought by tailor master Jouni Korhonen. Being an apprentice was (and still is) the only possible method of becoming a skilled tailor. Day after day Tuomo and Olli were set to do same things over and over again. Hemming trousers, making pockets, basting sleeves… The whole point on this was to get to practice under masters supervising eye. They heard ever so often: ”Quite good… now do it again. Try to improve this line here...” It was all about learning to do things the artisanal way. Step by step Tuomo and Olli learned to construct a whole bespoke suit from scratch and a wide range of highly demanding suit alterations.
Eventually they worked as apprentices in his tailorshop for almost 7 years, until 2004 Jouni passed away. Tuomo and Olli decided to continue his business and Vaatturiliike Sauma was born.
Sauma has come a long way in 21 years. But the core of the company still remains the same. It is all based on profound understanding of traditional tailoring. Then it is a matter of taste what you build upon and around that.
Here is a few pictures of Jouni. He was a lovely character and a great master in tailoring.
